GENDER VIOLENCE PREVENTION BEGINS WITH US

The alarming data on the increase of violence against women in all Western countries and especially against young women, has led us, schools from different European countries, to join our efforts to work in the prevention of violence against women.
Our main goal is to promote a change in a culture based on stereotypes that disfavour the role of women in contemporary society. We start from the deconstruction of pre-constituted models such as the model of masculinity or the myths of romantic love to provide other fairer and more equitable models.
The fundamental objectives of our project, closely related to the key competences, are the following:
  • Giving information and providing data on the definition and dissemination of gender-based violence and its characteristics (Citizenship competence)
  • Acquire the awareness of the equal dignity and value of people in various contexts (Citizenship competence)
  • Develop the ability to modify one's attitudes by learning to recognize in oneself and in other preconceptions, wrong idealizations of interpersonal relationships, violent behaviors and attitudes that connote a "culture of oppression" (Personal, social and learning to learn competence)
  • Acquire awareness in the use of digital technologies with particular reference to the phenomena of cyberbullying and sexting (Digital competence)
  • Developing the ability to learn and work both collaboratively and autonomously, skills that although not strictly connected with priorities can be enhanced thanks to the methodologies used. (Personal, social and learning to learn competence)
  • Develop ability to use different languages appropriately and effectively for communication (Multilingual competence)
In order to achieve these objectives, the participating teachers receive an initial training whose aim are to know better the theme of gender violence. to pay attention to the issue of gender diversity, to
promote mutual respect and to combat stereotypes. Teachers adopt "gender lenses" and are aware of early identification of actions that may already herald the first forms of "violence" even among students.
We are five schools participating in the project with Italy as coordinator:
  • ISIS Oscar Arnulfo Romero - Albino, Bergamo (Italy),
  • Jelgavas 4. vidusskola - Jelgava ( Latvia)
  • IES Al Ándalus - Almería (Spain)
  • Agrupamento de Escolas de Barroselas (Portugal)
  • Lycée Val de Garonne - Marmande (France).
In each school a team consists of several teachers and students, aged 16-19, are involved in our Erasmus+ project. This group, in each country approximately 24 students and 5-10 teachers, will work on transnational and local activities. The participation is open also to students and teachers not directly involved in mobility, the number can be different from school to school (from 40 to 150 students). In this way a larger number of students can be reach to promote a culture of prevention and not-violence.
The teachers involved in the project teach different subjects, both linguistic, humanistic, scientific and technological. Several teachers have been involved in European exchanges, several are academic trainers in the field of innovative pedagogical practices, several are experts in equality and coeducation in the school.
Our activities are developed in two complementary directions, one more documentary (investigation, comparison, recopilation) and other more emotional lead to the creation of more personal products such as a musical-choreographic product, a video, a narrative or poetic text.
Five short-term exchange are planned. They are the culmination for the activities that have previously been carried out in the schools. Students investigate about the topic and perform tasks. All activities
will be closely monitoring at each step.
An eTwinning project is also developed and we use the Twinspace forums to communicate and the platform to upload the results of the research. At least one online conference will be arranged each year. On 25/11 will be organised an event in each school.
An active methodology, based on collaborative work in transnational heterogeneous groups, using innovative pedagogical practices (project-based learning, game based learning...) is used in carrying out the project. During the planning and process, discussions will be organized so that everyone, students, teachers, parents, can express their offers.
The main results of our project are:
  • The creation of a website that collect all our experiences and productions what will be under Creative Common License for their free dissemination.
  • The study of feasibility to create an association (formal) of schools with the aim of to promote in new generations a culture and a greater awareness on gender issues, especially in school
Both will be created with the purpose of surviving after finishing the project as our longer term contribution to prevent in the school and to reach the eradication of the violence against women in our society.
